MultiRoofs

MultiRoofs is a collaborative initiative running from December 11, 2024, to June 30, 2029, funded by INTERREG NWE. It brings together 14 partners from Belgium, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Germany to tackle pressing urban challenges such as climate adaptation, energy transition, and housing shortages. The project focuses on reimagining the potential of urban rooftops across Northwest Europe by transforming them into multifunctional spaces that contribute to environmental and social resilience.

The central aim of MultiRoofs is to develop and implement solutions that enable rooftops to support a wide range of functions, including the generation of renewable energy, the enhancement of biodiversity, improved water absorption, and the creation of spaces for recreation and housing. Through these interventions, the project aspires to increase urban efficiency, resilience, and sustainability by optimizing the use of existing built environments.

As part of this effort, MLG will work in collaboration with FARI—AI for the Common Good Institute, a joint initiative of VUB and ULB, to create advanced digital twin tools. These tools will leverage large-scale aerial image datasets and computer vision models to visualize and manage rooftop transformation scenarios. The goal is to provide a robust, data-driven foundation for planning and implementing multifunctional rooftop solutions.

The digital twin tools will be integrated into the Computer Augmented Virtual Environment (CAVE) at FARI, offering an immersive platform for stakeholders to explore, simulate, and refine rooftop concepts in a highly interactive setting. The goal is to provide a robust and data-driven foundation for planning and implementing multifunctional rooftop solutions (by local authorities and property owners) while building the capacity of public authorities through a targeted training program designed to empower them to drive systemic change in urban areas.
